Weekly Round-up & Recap

Well hello there! Oof, y’all it’s been a minute. Post winter-break work has ramped up, I was finally boosted, and just bringing myself to take a moment to put thoughts to paper was a bit of a challenge. But here we are! Doing the dang thing! Take that therapy! Alright, I’ll calm tf down, before I get a little too cocky.

It’s been a big week. #booktwt continues to give me life, a few of my fave tweets of the week continue to make me LMFAO, enjoy:

I’ve read 31 books so far this year, a little head of my goal for 2022. And I seem to have descended into my historical romance era. Including, me taking to eBay to find the last book of the Victorian Rebels series by Kerrigan Byrne, which apparently is not in print anymore?

This week I read a few really good ones, including:

The Rogue of Fifth Avenue by Joanna Shupe (Free on KU)

A first in the Uptown Girls series, sees a proper lady Robin Hood and her fathers lawyer work together to free a woman from a murder charge. This was only my second ever Shupe (after reading a holiday novella late last year, and y’all I’m hooked.

It’s a nice reprieve to get a glimpse at regency life in NYC, and how things are same same but a little different. Her heroines are always so real feeling, and the genuine emotional connections she create between her love interests are really special. Mamie and Frank really go through some sh*t together and you can genuinely feel the mutual respect and care they have for each other. This one is special, definitely pick up free on KU.

The Prince of Broadway by Joanna Shupe

Of course, I needed the next book in this series right after finishing Mamie’s book. Ah Florence. Sweet, rebellious, sassy Florence. Clay and Florence are two “outsiders” that are so perfect for each other. Watching Clay teach Florence the in’s and out’s of the casino business, all while fighting the scorching sexual tension between them. Y’all this one was hot AF. Clay’s protectiveness, care and tenderness toward Flo, will touch your heart! Really looking forward to grabbing the last book in this series next!

Electric Idol by Katee Robert

Okay y’all. This book. This friggen book. I have been waiting since Neon Gods, to dig into Psyche and Eros’ marriage of convenience. And oh lord this was SO worth the wait. We’ve got, scary hitman who has never known love. We’ve got fat influencer who struggles to let people in. We’ve got LGBTQ+ representation. We’ve got a man who just wants to eat the kitty for hours. We’ve got a woman who will do everything to protect her husband. We’ve got ALL the steamy shit. We’ve got mirrors.

Also, seeing Hades and Persephone again made me almost deliriously happy.

Reckless by Lex Martin

This was my second Lex Martin book, and the second in the Texas Nights series. I have very little context but I feel like LM has some sort of deep gift for writing hot tattooed single dads. And sweetly sassy women who blow into their lives and help love their children. Like I said, its just a hypothesis. Reckless, is all about Kate’s sister Tori and her new boss Ethan. This one feels pretty similar to book one, but no less enjoyable. It’s a quick, easy, sexy read.

Duke with the Dragon Tattoo by Kerrigan Byrne

Ah my new HR queen Kerrigan Byrne. The 6th Victorian Rebels series centres on The Rook, who has started to cause some problems for our rebels in the previous books. This, to me is an almost perfect AU for Lorcan and Elide from Throne of Glass. Here we have the Rook, who is giant, and scary and a killer with zero heart. And Lorelei, a woman with a physical disability who has known nothing but pain and trauma (both physical and emotional) her entire life.

Watching her care for The Rook, and him just immediately fall in love with her was so great. It’s the perfect trope of he’s the big scary one and she’s the soft small sweet one, and the scary one is only soft for the sweet one. Y’all, this one really did it for me. Check trigger warnings before reading, as our gal KB really loves the deeply upsetting traumatic backstories.
